1828 William Judson Sherman

Born: 1828 in Masonville, Delaware County, NY Died: March 1, 1870 in Windham, Windham County, CT His father was Job Sherman His mother was (unknown - Job Sherman's first wife). He was married March 22, 1855 to Jane C. Wood in Plainfield, Windham County, CT, in a double ceremony with Jane's brother Daniel. N.B.: Another source shows that they were married May 22, 1855. Judson and Jane had six children together: 1856 Charles Sherman born 1856 1858 Robie Sherman born May 21, 1858 1860 Ella Sherman born May 25, 1860 1862 William A. Sherman born Aug. 1, 1862 1866 Nellie Sherman born May 31, 1866 1868 George H. Sherman born Jan. 12, 1868 He went by the name of Judson. Family history has it that he and his brother Lewis went to visit family in Windham, Connecticut and that he was killed there when a horse fell on him in March of 1870. The 1855 census for Masonville, NY lists: Judson, age 26, farmer; Jane, age 18 (wife); (Jane C. Wood, born in CT) Judson had lived in Masonville all his life (26 years); Jane had lived there for 2.5 years (at the time of the census). In the 1860 census for Cattaraugus County, NY there is a listing: William Sherman, age 30, Portville, engineer (p. 820) wife Jane, age 29 Charles Wood age 2 It is unlikely that this is the same "William and Jane", however the fact that "Charles Wood" is listed with them, and that Jane's maiden name was Wood, is a striking coincidence - there may well be more to this story! Judson is named in the Last will and testament of 1791 Aaron Green Broad. He was apparently a half-brother of 1815 Diantha Sherman Broad. The upper photo shows William, the lower photo shows William and Jane together; the two persons at the bottom are not identified, but are likely Jane and William at an earlier time; all these photos came from the same source.
