1831 Emiline Burghdorf
Born: October 1831 (or perhaps 1830) in Madison County, NY Died: May 1, 1912 in Afton, Chenango County, NY Her father was Peter Burghdorf (or Burgdorf) of Germany (no info). Her mother was Margaret "Peggy" Robbins (Robins), born about 1792. She was married to 1814 Lewis Sherman in 1849. They had these children together: 1850 Sylvester Sherman 1853 Schuyler Vanunsler Sherman 1855 Mary Sherman 1859 Delphine Sherman 1860 Sarah Sherman 1860 Francis Sherman 1871 Cora Sherman Lewis and Emiline also raised his son from a previous marriage: 1843 Henry C. Sherman Emiline is registration # 177 of Death, Town Clerk's Office, Afton NY. The 1910 Census for Afton, Chenango County, NY, lists Emiline, age 78, a widow, living next door to her son, 1853 Schuyler VanUnsler Sherman. She was born in 1830. I found her and Lewis in the 1855, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1875, 1880, 1900, and 1910 census. I had a suspicion that Lewis was married before and had Henry with his first wife. When I came across the 1865 New York census I indeed found that Lewis had been married twice! And in the 1900 census it stated that Lewis and Emeline were married in 1849, 6 years after Henry was born. Emiline would have been about 18 at marriage. After searching today as of now I haven't found Henry's birth mother. The 1865 census has me puzzled though; household members named are: Betsy D. (age 8) Frank (age 5) Hannah (less than 1 year I think, hard to read) Margaret Burgdorf (age 73) Henry (age 22) This is the first time I saw the names in bold. This is a hard family to get straight!
