1832 Daniel Wood - Additional Info

From: Katherine Kokko, descendant of Cornelia Wood.

Millie (descendent of Jane Wood) meet Larry (descendent of Daniel Wood)!

FYI - Your ancestors were married on the same day in a double wedding!

So I just sat down with my grandmother this evening (I happened
to be in the area on a weekday and thought I'd make some copies).
She pulled out a briefcase full of stuff I haven't seen! I now need
to scan it in and share with you both! I will do that and enter info
in its entirety soon. But it was so good I had to share ASAP!

The info includes:
------------------

My grandparents spent time in Florida with Geraldine ("Gerry") Sherman Martin
(descendant of Cornelia's sister Jane Wood Sherman)!
She shared family photos, of which we have photocopies (this was
pre-digital technology of course). These include pictures of Daniel,
Jane and William Judson Sherman.

Contact information for Cheryl Herzog, also related to Daniel Wood
(not sure if she is still living, but I will find out!)

Contact information for the woman that Millie mentioned to me lives
in Rockville (which is where I am moving - but not because of this
research, I promise!).

Copy of census form for inhabitants of Masonville, NY, includes
Jane C. Wood and William Judson Sherman.

Daniel and Asa's death certificates:  Daniel's lists Elizabeth Fuller;
Asa's lists Jane Fuller as the mother. Daniel died in East Douglas, MA.

Daniel Wood's Obituary, which lists relatives including Mary Britton and Asa
F. Wood. Also notes that "when a boy he took a notion to go to sea and
shipped aboard a whaling vessel called "Isaac Hicks", bound for the Arctic
regions...He was on her 18 months, his brother Cornelius sailing with him.
On leaving the ship, he lost track of his brother and never saw him again."
Also talked about his learning the moulder's trade and working in
Whitinsville.

This is the first documented indication I have of Cornelius' existence.

Records on Daniel, Asahel and Horace Wood (I will transpose in entirety
later - these are key pieces)

Daniel - Enlisted 6 Sept 1862 at Providence RI in Co C. 7 Reg RI Vol -
Discharged 9 June 1865 - was a moulder - sick a good bit of the time
in the service - Mary Amanda's father was a moulder and was in Plainfield
doing work for the Whitin Machine works. They all went to Whitinsville
later.

Asahel - married Jennie Johnson and had 2 children Mary Ida and John A.
Wood. Asa was part of Co. A, 18th Reg'ts Connecticut Infantry; born
Colchester; taken prisoner at Winchester, VA June 15th, 1863.

Horace - died at Libby Prison, VA 12 Dec 1864 after being taken prisoner
at Cedar Run near Middletown VA in October of 1864.

Ezra and Eliza applied for and drew pensions as they were dependent upon
their son (Horace), who worked in the cotton mills. I will transpose the
entire document that I have later (and from the summary, it sounds like
there was actually more paperwork than I have here). However, Eliza filled
out an application stating that she could not work, neither could Ezra and
she goes on to list her children and the amount of support she has received
from them in the recent past. She also states that she lived in Greenville
for 4 years, lived in Masonvillle NY for 3 years and then Montville, CT for
2.5 years. This confirms how much moving around they did! Oddly, Eliza
also gives three different marriage dates in these affiadavits, but
consistently says on census info that she has been married once. (27 Jan
1830, 12 Jan 1834, Feb 1831). The couple did not sign this document, but
left their marks.

Apparently the 1865 census of Masonville lists Ezra and Eliza as
living with Jane and William Judson Sherman. I missed that one.

Finally, it suddently dawned on me that my great, great grandfather
(Cornelia's son) had a brother...who might have descendents!
Grandma had newspaper clippings and one was of this man's 50th wedding
anniversary. I will try to track him down (along with everyone else!).
I had forgotten about him because I didn't know he was married!

Perhaps after all this, I will find information about Cornelia from
my own "line." But hey, I'm having fun anyway! My mystery still
stands though - who were Ezra and Eliza Wood and were they both
Cornelia's parents??

Have a great night!

~Kate
