1840 Asahel F. Wood

Born: before August, 1840 at Colchester, CT Died: July 9, 1915 at Northbridge, MA (aged 75 years) He is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery at Whitinsville (Northbridge), Worcester County, MA; his grave is in the "Meadow Path" section, plot 17, grave 2. His age at death (taken from his tombstone) indicates that he was born in 1840, rather than in 1838 or 1839, as had been reported elsewhere. 1840 seems to be correct. His full name is probably "Asahel Fuller Wood". His father was 1806 Ezra Wood His mother was Jane Fuller. He was the twin brother of 1840 John Wood. He was married to Jennie Johnson; they had two children, Mary Ida Wood and John A. (probably Asahel) Wood. He lost his wife and daughter in a house fire on May 25, 1900; at that time Jennie was 54 years old and Mary Ida was 35; that means that Jennie was born about 1846 and Mary Ida about 1865. Asahel's death certificate lists "Jane Fuller" as his mother. She was probably the sister of Elizabeth Fuller, the mother of Ezra's earlier children. Asahel was part of Co. A, 18th Reg'ts Connecticut Infantry. He enlisted Aug. 6, 1862 at Norwich, CT at the age of 23. He was part of Hunter's Raid through the Shenandoah Valley. He was injured on retreat from the Battle at Hanging Rock. He was taken prisoner at Winchester, VA on June 15, 1863. He was mustered out on June 27, 1865. Here is a scanned image of Asahel's War Record. Asa is part of Ruth T. Pfund's family tree. Info from Katherine Kokko Genealogy HOME Search Tool
