1843 Henry C. Sherman

Born: 1843

Died: 1924

He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, NY.

His father was 1814 Lewis Sherman

His birth mother is unknown at this time.

His step-mother was 1831 Emiline Burghdorf.

He was married to Henrietta (last name probably Vandervoort).
Henrietta was probably born in 1840 or 1841, according to later
census records.

Henry C. Sherman was in the Civil War. He served in Company 'E',
61st New York regiment organized in New York City 25 Oct. 1861.
He was mustered out on 14 July 1865. He saw a lot of action.
He was at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865 to witness the
surrender of General Lee and his army.

NOTE: Some information shows a birth year of 1840, however
this is not consistent with the 1850 census information, in
which Henry was listed as being six years of age, nor with
the 1870 census, which shows him as being 26 years of age.
I have therefore taken the liberty of concluding that he was
actually born in 1843. At this time, we don't know who his mother
was; he was raised by Lewis and his second wife, Emiline.

of Gettysburg, in which Henry fought with the 61st NY regiment.

The 1865 census for Sanford, Broome Co., NY shows:

  Betsy D. (8)
  Frank (5)
  Hannah (less than 1 year old I think, hard to read)
  Margaret Burghdorf (73), Emiline's mother, and
  Henry (22)

The 1870 census of Sanford, Broome Co., NY lists:

  Henry, age 26;
  Henrietta (wife of Henry; probably a Vandervoort), age 29;
  Florence DeGroot, age 8 (attends school); and
  W.R. Vandervoort, age 56, a blacksmith, born about 1814.

They were living next door to Henry's father, Lewis Sherman.
