1843 Henry C. ShermanBorn: 1843 Died: 1924 He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, NY. His father was 1814 Lewis Sherman His birth mother is unknown at this time. His step-mother was 1831 Emiline Burghdorf. He was married to Henrietta (last name probably Vandervoort). Henrietta was probably born in 1840 or 1841, according to later census records. Henry C. Sherman was in the Civil War. He served in Company 'E', 61st New York (regiment?) organized in New York City 25 Oct. 1861. He was mustered out on 14 July 1865. He saw lots of action. He was at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865 to witness the surrender of General Lee and his army. Here is a link to more information about New York 61st Volunteers. The 1870 census of Sanford, Broome Co., NY lists: Henry, age 26; Henrietta, age 29; Florence DeGroat (or DeGroot), age 8 (attends school); and W.R. Vandervoort, age 56, a blacksmith, born about 1814. They were living next door to Henry's father, Lewis Sherman. NOTE: Some information shows a birth year of 1840, however this is not consistent with the 1850 census information, in which Henry was listed as being six years of age, nor with the 1870 census, which shows him as being 26 years of age. I have therefore taken the liberty of concluding that he was actually born in 1843. We don't know who his mother was at this time; he was raised by Lewis and his second wife, Emiline. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Valarie Bigler
Date: Sun, Mar 22, 2015 at 8:53 PM Subject: Lewis Sherman To: James Alan Sherman I have been trying to figure out the age problem with Emiline Burgdorf. She was born in 1830. I found her and Lewis in the 1855, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1875, 1880, 1900, and 1910 census. I had a suspicion that Lewis was married before and had Henry with his first wife. When I came across the 1865 New York census I indeed found that Lewis had been married twice! And in the 1900 census it stated that Lewis and Emeline were married in 1849, 6 years after Henry was born. Emiline would have been about 18 at marriage. After searching today as of now I haven't found Henry's birth mother. The 1865 census has me puzzled though. Children named are: Betsy D. (8), Frank (5), Hannah (less than 1 year old I think, hard to read)*, Margaret Burgdorf (73) and Henry (22). This is the first time I saw the names in bold. This is a hard family to get straight!
