1843 George Washington Smith

Born: July 26, 1843 in Blodget Mills, NY Died: July 8, 1928 in Marathon, Cortland County, NY His father was Merrick Smith. His mother was (name unknown). George was the youngest of three children of this couple. George was a Private in Company 'F', 76th New York Regiment, New York State Volunteers from 1861 to 1864. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 and his left leg was amputated below the knee. He was married on Dec. 27, 1869, to Mary Ann Swart, at East Virgil, NY by A. McVaine, Justice of the Peace. They had these children together: Vida M. Smith born Nov. 11, 1870 Alley P. Smith born Apr. 3, 1872 George B. Smith born July 9, 1879 William A. Smith born July 20, 1881 Pearl D. Smith born Nov. 27, 1888 After leaving the service, being discharged at his own request, George listed his places of residence as being: Blodgets Mills, Cortland County, NY Marathon, Cortland County, NY Oxford, Chenango County, NY and listed his occupations as "mechanic and merchant".
