1853 Schuyler Vanunsler Sherman


Born: July 23, 1853 in Bennettsville, Chenango County, NY.

Died: Jan. 31, 1924 in East Afton, Chenango County, NY.

He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, NY.


His father was 1814 Lewis Sherman

His mother was 1831 Emiline Burghdorf.


An alternate spelling of his name may be "Schuyler Van Unsler Sherman".

He may have been born in Sanford, rather than Bennettsville, but his
obituary says he was born in Bennettsville.

He was married April 27, 1882 to 1859 Lydia Abiah Olendorf in Afton, NY.

They had five children together:  

  1883 Ralph Sherman              
  1888 Manville (Schuyler) Sherman
  1891 William C. Sherman         
  1895 Mary Ellen Sherman         
  1897 Myrtle Ida Sherman         
  
The 1902 Afton Business Directory states that Schuyler was living 
on Route 29, Bennettsville, NY as a farmer with six dairy cows and 
owned 51 acres of land.

The 1910 census for Afton, Chenango County, NY lists:

  Schuyler,      age 56 
  Lydia,         age 51 
  Manville,      age 24 
  William C.,    age 18
  Myrtle,        age 13

The 1920 census for Afton, Chenango County, NY lists:

  Schuyler,      age 64;
  Liddie (Lydia) age 60; and 
  Manville,      age 33.  

They were living next to 1891 William Crandall Sherman.

Schuyler purchased the Sherman Homestead between 1902 and 1910.

His grandson Charles and two of his great-grandsons still live
there in 2010 (David Sherman and Charles Sherman Jr. aka Chuck).

From the Bainbridge Republican  Feb. 7, 1924:

Schuyler Sherman aged 70 years died at his home Thursday morning 
at 8 o'clock, after an illness of several months, following an 
accident last Summer from which he never fully recovered. Besides 
his wife he is survived by one daughter Mrs. Julien Vandewalker 
who is night operator in the Bell telephone office; also three sons, 
Manville, Ralph and William and thirteen grandchildren, a brother 
Henry also of this village, two sisters Mrs. Francis Hall of Binghamton, 
and Mrs. Charles Beilby of North Sanford.  His funeral was held at the 
Baptist church Sunday at one o'clock, Rev. R.B. Whitman officiating.

Schuyler Sherman
October 22, 1880

Schuyler Sherman of Olean, formerly of this place, is visiting his 
many friends and schoolmates in this vicinity.  He is a young man 
of uncommon promise and that joy and success may attend him through 
all future life is the wish of his many friends.


December 17, 1880
Bennettsville [Chenango Co., NY]:  

Skyler [sic] Sherman has rented the Crandall tannery for a term of 
years.  We expect now to have a tannery that is a tannery.


Schuyler died at home at 8:00 after an illness of several months, 
following an accident (a horse fell on him).  He was a farmer 
living in East Afton.  Info from the census records for Afton and
