His father was 1828 James Mortimer Pulis. His mother was 1833 Jane Brown. He was the twin brother of 1876 Emery Brown Pulis. He was able to read and write; highest grade completed was 8th grade. Elmer was married April 12, 1906 to 1879 Huldah Marie Johnson. Census records show the following residences for the family: 1900 Bangor, Walworth, SD; farmer, farm owned by James. M. Pulis, mortgaged James M. Pulis, Head-of-Household Elmer J. Pulis, son 1906 Married Huldah Marie Johnson on Nov. 12, 1906 in South Dakota. 1907 lived in Selby, Walworth County, SD 1910 Bangor, Walworth, SD; farmer, farm owned by James M. Pulis, 21, son Bessie Pulis, 27, wife of Ivan Dwight Pulis, 1, son of Ivan and Bessie Matthew Maloney, 39 (presumed ranch hand) Jack Plack, 21 (presumed ranch hand) 1950 Wilsall, Park, MT; farmer, land ownership not shown Elmer 74, Head-of-Household Huldah 71, wife Milton 40, son There is some confusion in the record of their whereabouts. In the obituary of wife Huldah, it states that the family moved to the ranch in Wilsall in 1911; in the obituary for son Ivan Pulis, it states that the family moved to Oregon in 1919, then to the ranch in Wilsall in 1926. It is possible that both are correct, but it seems unlikely. They may have lived on one ranch from 1911 to 1919, then on a different ranch (probably the one on Pulis Lane), from 1926 on. The family moved to Woodburn, Oregon in 1919 where Elmer's sister 1857 Mary "Mae" Pulis, was living. They then moved to Wilsall, Montana in 1926. The photo shows Elmer and Huldah, with their three sons; it was taken about 1940 at Grigsby's Studio in Livingston, Montana. The Grigsby Studio operated in Livingston, MT from 1910 to 1945. I have the original of this photograph. Shown in the photo are - back row, left to right (believed): 1908 Ivan T. Pulis - born in South Dakota 1918 Harley M. Here is a link to Elmer's death certificate. Information from: Charles Bryce Woodruff Gary Pulis James Alan Sherman I found these government documents of surveys made in 1951 to establish water rights in Park County, Montana. Elmer's name is mentioned as he owned irrigation ditches that came from Little Cottonwood Creek, which is near Elk Ridge at N 45.96327, W. 110.44131. Elmer's irrigation ditches are in Township No. 4 North, Range 8 East, Park County, so they are shown on page 4 of the report, which translates to page 12 of this PDF. Elmer and Milton Pulis are named in this collection of survey field notes. On page 47 of 60 in the above linked documents, Mr. Nels Swandal states that Elmer owned sections 5, 9, 18 and 21 of T4N R8E. I noted that Milton Pulis was shown as a nearby landowner as well. In these survey records, Elmer J. Pulis ("E.J. Pulis") is shown to be the owner of the ranch in Wilsall, which contradicts claims elsewhere that he was renting the land. I believe the Montana state records are correct in this regard. And here is a reference to a (water) well named "Pulis 7-15", located in: SW NE T4N R8E which means roughly: SouthWest corner of NorthEast section of Township 4 North, Range 8 East (Park County, Montana). See page 2 of: Montana Government Publications. This well was drilled by the Bill Barrett Company; it was reported to be 7.5 miles NW of Wilsall, MT and 13.5 miles SE of Ringling, MT. JAS The photo below right was taken at the Pulis ranch home eight miles north of Wilsall, Montana. There was a problem with double-exposure, but it shows a view into their lives not available elsewhere. The bottom photo shows US Montana Hwy 89 between Wilsall and Ringling, MT.
