1897 Myrtle Ida Sherman

Born: March 13, 1897 at Bennettsville, NY.

Died: April 20, 1981 at Johnson City, Broome County, NY.

She is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge NY.

Her father was Schuyler Vanunsler Sherman

Her mother was Lydia Abiah Olendorf

Myrtle worked as the night telephone operator at the Bell Telephone
office (in Afton, we believe).

Myrtle was married Oct. 18, 1919 to Julian Vandewalker at Afton, NY.
Julian fought in World War I and was badly injured by mustard gas,
such that he died shortly after returning home from the war.

Myrtle then married Glenn W. Rock on Sep. 27, 1926 at Afton, NY.
Glenn was quite elderly at the time of their marriage, and he died
a short time after they were married.

Myrtle then married Benjamin H. Ward July 23, 1928 at Bainbridge, NY.

Myrtle and Ben had these children together:

  1934 Lloyd Ward
  1936 Lila Ward
  1938 Loren Ward

I have a hand-written document from one of 1899 Bessie Sherman's
nieces which states that:

"A Mr. Teachout, who was married to one of Myrtle's sisters,
sold a house to Benjamin and Myrtle."

Actually I believe that the person in question was William Teachout,
who was married to Myrtle's aunt, 1866 Georgiana Olendorf, a sister
of 1859 Lydia Olendorf. The house in question is in Union Valley, NY,
not far from Afton. Mr. Teachout could not have married Myrtle's
only sister, who died at age one year - 1895 Mary Ellen Sherman.

Birth info from Town Clerk's office, Bainbridge NY, Reg # 11439.

Info is from obituaries and family members. Research by Millie Lockwood.

The photo at lower right was taken in the 1950's, exact year unknown.

The photo below left was taken in the 1930's; I cannot tell which of
their children this is. Shown are Benjamin, Myrtle Sherman Ward, and
their baby.
