1959 Aerial Photo of Sherman Homestead

This aerial photo of the Sherman Homestead was taken in 1959. This property came into the family about 1902 - 1910, when it was settled by Schuyler Van Unsler Sherman. When he died in 1924, the farm went to his second son, Schuyler (Manville) Sherman, who later sold it to his brother, William Crandall Sherman. His eldest son, Ralph, had purchased a piece of property just a couple of miles further down (to the right) on East Afton Road. Sherman Hill Road is the tree-lined road going up the hill to the right. East Afton Road meanders across the bottom/front of the photo and proceeds off to the left, going out to North Sanford Road. The near (lower) house was moved onto the property by Charles and Wilford; it had formerly been a schoolhouse. This piece of land, across East Afton Road from the original house, is no longer part of the remaining homestead in 2010. The original house is shown further up and in the center of the photo. The barn is at center right, with the chicken coop just above and behind it. The barn burned down years ago and was never rebuilt. In 2010 Charles Stewart Sherman and Marcia Joan Miller Sherman live in the original house, the same house that Charles was born in, back in 1935. Two of their children, David and Charles, live on properties that were split off from the original homestead.
