Cannonsville, NY

Cannonsville, NY was ten miles NNW of Hancock, up County Road 67,
aka "Sands Creek Road". It is believed that Sands Creek Road was
named after the Sands family who lived in its valley in the early
1800's. Horace Morley's mother was from that Sands family. Horace
was a great-grandfather of Charles Bryce Woodruff, my cousin.

The town of Cannonsville was created in 1839 by Benjamin Cannon.

For a time it was also known as "Dickinson" or "Dickinson City".

Sadly, Cannonsville no longer exists - it was razed decades ago to
make way for a reservoir to provide an additional water supply to
New York City.

The last Christmas celebrated in Cannonsville was December 25, 1955.
The bulldozing of the valley was completed in 1963. The ghost of
Cannonsville today lies under a few hundred feet of water.
