Family Farm: Dutcher

The Dutcher family farm, which Cyrus Marvin Dutcher bought in 1901,
was up at or near the top of a "stony mountain" along Sands Creek Road,
which is County Road 67 running from Hancock to Cannonsville, NY.

In an effort to pinpoint precisely where this farm is, I have extracted the
following indicators from the autobiographies of my

aunt Sister Ruth Esther Sherman and my paternal

grandmother, Bessie Ann Dutcher Sherman.

Here is a Map of Hancock Township.

By that time we had left the farm, because we both were working,
and since our farm was located on a steep hillside which neither
we nor our car could climb especially in winter. While we were
still living on the farm, one of our neighbors whose farm joined
ours on the southern border was an Irish family, Jim and Mary
Foley with their son, Joseph who was crippled of his left leg.

A family who lived at the foot of the hill to our house was
Irish Catholic - Jim and Mary Foley. Their son, "Little Joe",
was left alone after his parents died so he came to live with us.

There was a man named Virgil Whittaker who lived at the end of the
road on the other side of the railroad tracks. He was considered a
wealthy man. At one time his family had horses and stagecoaches.

The Northern Star Silk Factory was located at the far end of town.

We walked about one mile each way to and from work at the silk mill.
